UPDATE: Oscar slept by my side all night, holding my hand between his paws. Both of us had very fitful sleep. He'd wake up, and I'd wake up - he'd look at me as if to check that I was still there, and I to check that he was still breathing. Today, Oscar at some wet food - which had been refusing for a very long time. He took his medicine like a champ, drank a lot from the water fountain, gazed out the window for a long while, and is now sleeping. I love him and am so grateful that he was brought to us last May.
Please send healing comfort to Oscar. He's not doing well. At probably 14, he's in end stage kidney failure and has an upper respiratory infection. He just begrudgingly allowed me to administer subq fluids and antibiotic. He doesn't want to be held, which is not like him. Oscar decided he wanted to come into the office, where I've been sleeping with SunnyRay, Raef and Rudy, and is enjoying the window view. Oscar has been with us since 5/11/24 having been rescued from a hoarding situation at another "rescue." Kept in a very small cage with only a litter pan, outside in the hot Florida heat, he was emaciated and severely dehydrated with ringworm and coccidia when he arrived with three kittens in similar condition. Thankfully, under our care, all survived. Oscar had a nightmare of a life even before he found himself at that so-called rescue. Hopefully, Oscar will pull thru this setback.
The bloodwork is back, and it is as we feared. Oscar is very much into stage 4 renal failure. The numbers are off the charts. The odd thing is - (even though we know how stoic cats are) - he acts like he's just fine. Roams all over the Sanctuary, enjoys the screened rooms, continues to find me, and very loudly tell me he wants me to join him - giving pets - while he eats - Eating kibble (despite losing one lb in a month) - but refusing to eat what he needs - canned food and prescription food - but as the vet says - it's more important that he eat ... whatever he wants. He hasn't needed sub-q fluids in over six months and isn't dehydrated. I keep a close eye on that. He's close to the point of possibly needing blood transfusions. We've ordered a newly discovered drug and another supplement. Dr. Lowe has had a good outcome with this medication with another cat who was even worse than Oscar. In any event, at 13 or more years old, with tiny, shriveled kidneys, Oscar is on borrowed time. We will continue to provide for him, to love him, and to keep a close watch. Thank you for your encouragement and your financial support as we see this brave boy through.
